Comprehensive Car Insurance

Comprehensive insurance is the highest level of cover provided by St.George, offering more protection for damage to your vehicle among other areas. The areas which can be covered under this Comprehensive Car Insurance include:

  • Accidental loss of or damage to your car (including theft) during the period your insurance policy is active
  • Up to $20 million in legal liability cover for damage to other people’s property caused by you or another individual driving your car (or substitute vehicle while yours is repaired after a covered incident)
  • Supplementary cover for bodily injury caused in a covered event you’re liable for (up to $20 million)
  • Reimbursement for personal items damaged in a covered incident or stolen from your locked car (up to $1,000)
  • Cover for damaged or stolen baby capsules or child seats inside your car (up to $500)
  • Reimbursement of reasonable costs for a hire car after theft or attempted theft until your car is found undamaged, repaired or claim is settled, up to a maximum of 30 days and $100 per day
  • Reimbursement of reasonable costs for towing and storing your vehicle if it's deemed unsafe to drive after a covered event
  • Replacement of your car with a new model of the same make, model, engine and features (if available in Australia) if it’s declared a total loss after being purchased new or ex-demo and less than two years old from first registration
  • Coverage for emergency or temporary repairs to ensure your car is safe to drive (up to a limit of $500)
  • Reimbursement of reasonable costs for emergency transport home or accommodation if your car is deemed unsafe to drive due to a covered incident and you're over 100km from where it’s typically parked at night (up to $1,000 per claimable event)
  • If your keys are stolen by someone who isn’t a family member, housemate or invitee, coverage for replacement keys and recoding of your car's locks (up to a limit of $1,000)
  • Reimbursement of costs for travel required to return you, your partner and/or dependents to your home and/or to collect your vehicle (up to $500 per incident)
  • Cover for damage to, or loss of, a trailer or caravan attached to your vehicle (lesser of market value and $1,000)
  • Temporary cover for a replacement vehicle after you sell or give away your current car and gain a new one (equivalent cover as set out in your existing policy for up to 14 days)
  • Quality of repairs guaranteed by St.George
Third Party Property Damage Car Insurance

The least comprehensive and cheapest cover, third party property damage is designed more to protect you against having to fork out large sums in the event you damage someone else’s property. St.George’s Third Party Property Damage Car Insurance includes:

  • Up to $20 million in legal liability cover for damage to other people’s property caused by you or another individual driving your car (or substitute vehicle while yours is repaired after a covered incident)
  • Supplementary cover for bodily injury caused in a covered event you’re liable for (up to $20 million)
  • Damage to your vehicle caused by an uninsured driver (up to $5,000)
  • Quality of repairs guaranteed by St.George

Are there any optional extras available through St.George?

Yes – St.George offers several optional extras on its Comprehensive Car Insurance policies. These are:

  • Reimbursement of reasonable costs for a hire car after a covered event until your car is repaired or your claim is settled, up to a maximum of 30 days and $100 per day (or extended by St.George to the extent the delay is its fault)
  • One covered replacement and two covered repair claims for windscreen, window or sunroof glass without an excess charged per period of insurance (provided claims relate solely to glass damage)
  • Cover for tools of trade, trade stock and materials accidentally lost or damaged (subject to terms and conditions, up to $3,000 per incident)

What are some of the pros and cons of buying car insurance through St.George?

  • Extensive hire car cover after theft: while many insurers will allow you to claim for the cost of a hire car following the theft of your vehicle for up to 14 to 21 days, you can do so for up to 30 through St.George.
  • Liability and personal injury cover: George not only offers legal liability cover for third party property damage but also includes protection for up to $20 million if you injure someone in a covered event.
  • Choice of repairer: you’ll have a choice of repairer on your car insurance policy, provided it meets the relevant insurer requirements.
  • No automatic hire car cover after not-at-fault accident: although it’s available as an optional extra for up to 30 days, you won’t automatically be covered for a hire car if yours is damaged in a not-at-fault motor accident.
  • Limited product selection: you can only choose between Comprehensive and Third Party Property Damage policies, with St.George no longer offering any third party fire and theft cover.
