Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) is the NBN connection with the highest power and best performance, bringing high-speed internet to homes around Australia. However, it’s important to know that if you have a battery included in your FTTP installation, it can run out of charge like any other battery. Find out more about NBN batteries and what to do when you need to replace them in Savvy’s handy guide!

Why do I need an NBN battery?

With a FTTP connection, you'll have the option to install a battery to act as a backup in the event of an outage, such as a storm. This can be useful if you’re working from home, as this will provide you with an internet connection (if your router also has a battery backup) and allow you to continue using landline phone services.

In most cases, this extra power can last for up to five hours, with the warranty of the battery generally lasting two years from its installation. You may decide that it’s worth installing this backup battery should you find yourself in this situation.

How do I change and replace my NBN battery?

Replacing an NBN battery is much like doing so for any other battery-powered item, such as a remote. You’ll need to follow this simple process:

  1. Purchase an identical battery (12V/7Ah or 7.2Ah, 6 cell sealed lead acid battery)
  2. Disconnect your Power Supply from your home’s electricity
  3. Remove the cover of the Power Supply and disconnect the red positive (+) plug
  4. Push the tabs above and below the battery outward to remove it
  5. Disconnect the black negative plug (-)
  6. From here, either have your new battery installed by a professional or do so yourself
  7. Connect the new battery in the reverse order (black negative plug, push tabs outwards, red positive plug)
  8. Replace the cover of the Power Supply, reconnect it to your electricity and turn it on
  9. Your internet and phone should be back up within ten minutes, while your new battery should be fully charged within 24 hours

How do I know if my NBN battery needs a replacement?

Several indicators can help you determine if the battery on your NBN plan requires replacement:

  • Low battery alarm: most NBN Connection Boxes have a low battery alarm or indicator light that notifies you when the battery needs replacement. If there’s an alarm sound coming from your battery, you’ll likely need to replace it, but you can silence the alarm on the Power Supply console.
  • Frequent power outages: if you experience frequent power outages and notice a decline in battery backup performance, it's a sign that the battery may need replacement.
  • Battery age: NBN backup batteries have a limited lifespan, typically around three to five years at most. If your battery is approaching or surpassing this timeframe, it's worth looking at replacing it before you’re caught short.

Where can I buy a replacement NBN battery?

You can purchase a replacement NBN battery through several channels:

  • NBN service provider: contact your NBN service provider to enquire about a replacement battery, particularly if it’s still within its warranty. If it’s still covered, they can organise a replacement.
  • Specialist battery stores: there are several store chains around Australia specialising in batteries, so it’s worth checking with one of them if there’s one nearby.
  • Electronics stores: many electronics retailers and stores selling NBN-compatible equipment may carry replacement batteries. As mentioned, it’s important to ensure you purchase a battery which is compatible with your specific NBN connection box model.
  • Online marketplaces: websites like Amazon, eBay, or specialised battery retailers may have a wide selection of batteries to choose from. However, be sure to verify the compatibility and legitimacy of any online site before making a purchase.

How should I dispose of my NBN battery?

NBN batteries are recyclable, but because of the hazardous materials contained within them, they’re unsuitable for standard home recycling. Because of this, you’ll need to take the battery to a specialist recycling centre near you or return them to certain electronics stores, some of which are capable of recycling them. Check with your local council or electronics store if you’re unsure of where to dispose of your NBN battery.
