Pharaoh Hound

Overview

The Pharaoh Hound, which, despite its name, is believed to have originated in Malta, is a breed known for its elegant and athletic appearance. They boast a sleek and tan coat, complemented by their slender and graceful build. Originally used as hunting dogs, Pharaoh Hounds exhibit remarkable speed and agility, making them versatile athletes that often excel in various dog sports.

Despite their active nature, they display a gentle and affectionate temperament towards their human companions. Their sociable disposition extends to other dogs, making them well-suited for multi-pet households.

As pets, Pharaoh Hounds thrive in active families that can provide them with regular exercise and mental stimulation. Their adaptable nature allows them to flourish in a range of living environments, from urban settings to more rural areas. With proper training and early socialisation, they become devoted companions, bringing their unique blend of elegance and athleticism to modern households.

Common diseases and conditions of Pharaoh Hounds

The Pharaoh Hound is generally a very healthy breed with no major health concerns. This is due to responsible breeding practices as well as the dog’s robust build. However, the breed may suffer minor ailments and issues, such as:

  • Anaesthesia sensitivity: Pharaoh Hounds can sometimes be more sensitive to anaesthesia than other breeds. This means that veterinarians need to carefully monitor their anaesthesia levels during surgical procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of the dog.
  • Atopy: atopy is a condition where dogs develop allergic reactions to environmental allergens like pollen, dust mites and mould spores. This can lead to symptoms such as itching, redness and skin irritation.

Breed-specific issues:

Pharaoh Hounds tend to be reserved around strangers, so early socialisation is crucial to help them become more confident and well-adjusted in various social settings. Due to their high intelligence, Pharaoh Hounds thrive on mental stimulation. Without adequate mental engagement, they may exhibit signs of boredom, potentially leading to excessive barking, as well as destructive chewing and digging behaviours. Providing them with challenging activities and interactive toys can help prevent such issues.

In addition, Pharaoh Hounds can be quite independent thinkers, which may present training challenges. It’s important for owners to establish themselves as consistent and patient leaders through positive reinforcement techniques. This breed’s strong prey drive, coupled with their impressive speed, means they have a tendency to chase small animals. This trait should be kept in mind during outdoor activities, especially in areas where wildlife or other pets may be present.

How much does pet insurance cost for a Pharaoh Hound?

There are many factors that can influence the cost of pet insurance for your Pharaoh Hound, including the following:

  • Age: the older your dog is, the more pet insurance is likely to cost. This is because older dogs tend to have more physical health conditions and illnesses due to age, and so present a higher insurance risk.
  • Type of insurance you choose:  there are three basic types of pet insurance available in Australia; accident-only, accident and illness, and comprehensive insurance. An accident-only policy is the cheapest type available, with comprehensive coverage costing the most.
  • The policy annual limit: each pet insurance policy has an annual limit, which is the maximum amount that will be paid out on the policy in one financial year. Annual limits range from around $10,000 up to $25,000 or more.
  • Sub limits: in addition to an annual limit, there may also be sub limits which apply to the policy, for example a $300 sub limit for consultation fees, or a $5,000 limit for cruciate ligament conditions.
  • Benefit percentage: pet insurance may not cover 100% of the cost of your vet bill. Instead, it may pay a percentage of the total bill. This can range from 50% for cheaper policies, up to 90% for top-of-the-range cover.
  • Excess amount: this is the amount you’ll need to pay out-of-pocket each time you make a claim on your policy. Some pet insurance policies do not come with an excess amount, whilst others do.
  • Any add-ons you choose: it’s possible to add on more cover options to a basic policy, such as emergency boarding fees, routine care and dental care. These add-ons extend the scope of your pet insurance, but do increase the overall cost of the policy.
  • Discounts: some insurers offer discounts of between 5% and 15% if you have multiple pets insured together, if you pay your premium annually, or if you bundle your pet insurance with other forms of insurance with the same company.

Common questions about Pharaoh Hounds

Are Pharaoh Hounds suitable for families with children?

Yes – Pharaoh Hounds are known for their gentle and friendly nature, which makes them excellent companions for families with children. They are typically patient and affectionate with kids. However, it's crucial to teach children how to properly interact with dogs and supervise their interactions to ensure both the child and the dog feel comfortable and safe.

Do Pharaoh Hounds require a lot of mental stimulation?

Yes – Pharaoh Hounds are intelligent dogs that thrive on mental stimulation. They enjoy activities that challenge their minds and keep them engaged. Puzzle toys, obedience training, and interactive games are excellent ways to provide mental stimulation. Engaging their intellect not only keeps them mentally sharp but also helps prevent boredom, which can lead to unwanted behaviours.

Are Pharaoh Hounds suitable for apartment living?

Yes – but keep in mind that while Pharaoh Hounds can adapt to apartment living, they are active dogs with high energy levels that require regular exercise and mental stimulation to thrive. Access to a secure, fenced area for off-leash playtime is highly beneficial. Additionally, daily walks and engaging activities are essential in meeting their energy needs, even in an apartment setting. Providing ample opportunities for physical and mental exercise will contribute to a happy and well-adjusted Pharaoh Hound.

Do Pharaoh Hounds have any unique behaviours or quirks?

Yes – one distinctive trait of Pharaoh Hounds is their “blushing” when excited or happy. This involves their ears and nose turning a deep rosy colour and is an aspect that many owners find delightful.
