What car insurance policies are available through RAA?

RAA offers the following types of car insurance to South Australian drivers:

Comprehensive Car Insurance

Comprehensive car insurance offers the most extensive cover of the different types of insurance. RAA’s Comprehensive Car Insurance offers the following inclusions:

  • Coverage for loss or damage to your vehicle caused by accidents, fire, flood, hail, malicious damage, storm and theft
  • Coverage for legal liability for damage to other people’s property as a result of an incident involving your vehicle, up to $20 million
  • Coverage for legal liability for death or bodily injury using your vehicle, up to $5 million
  • A temporary replacement vehicle for 14 days after selling or disposing of your car
  • Reimbursement for the cost of baby capsules or child seats damaged or stolen in a covered incident
  • Lifetime repair guarantee
  • Choice of repairer
  • Deceased driver cover, up to $5,000
  • Reimbursement for emergency repairs, up to $750
  • Emergency travel and accommodation costs up to $750 if you are stranded more than 100km from home
  • Hire car up to $65 per day for up to 21 days if your insured vehicle is stolen and not recovered
  • Lifetime and new vehicle replacement, subject to conditions
  • Personal belongings that are damaged or stolen from your insured vehicle, up to $1,000
  • Car key replacement after theft, up to $1,000
  • Towing and storage after an incident
  • Unlimited windscreen, window or roof glass repairs or replacement, with no excess payable for claims
Third Party Property, Fire and Theft Car Insurance

This type of cover is a step down from comprehensive. Although it doesn’t come with cover for accidental damage to your vehicle, it does include protections against damage sustained due to theft, attempted theft and fire, as well as damage to other vehicles and property. RAA’s policy offers the following inclusions:

  • Loss or damage to your car as a result of fire, theft or attempted theft
  • Cover for your legal liability for loss or damage to third-party property resulting from the use of your vehicle, trailer or caravan, up to $20 million
  • Cover for your legal liability in case of death or bodily injury to any person resulting from the use of your vehicle, up to a maximum of $5 million
  • Coverage for a replacement vehicle for 14 days after selling or disposing of your vehicle
  • Choice of repairer
  • All legal costs and expenses reimbursed for an incident covered by the policy, with prior agreement
  • Lifetime guarantee on repairs
  • Cover for damage you cause to other people's property while driving an uninsured substitute vehicle, up to $20 million
  • Cover for damage to your vehicle caused by an uninsured driver of an uninsured vehicle, up to $3,000
  • Replacement baby capsule, booster or child seat if it is damaged or stolen while fitted to your vehicle
  • Hire car for up to 21 days if your vehicle is stolen, up to $65 per day up to a maximum of 21 days
  • Replacement car keys after theft, up to $1,000
  • Transport cover for the return of your vehicle if it is recovered following theft
  • The cost of towing and storing your vehicle until repairs can be made after a covered incident
Third Party Property Insurance

The most basic form of optional car insurance in Australia, RAA’s Third Party Property Insurance is designed to cover damage caused to other people’s property, rather than to your own vehicle. The policy offers the following inclusions:

  • Coverage for any legal liability you may face due to property damage caused by your vehicle, trailer or caravan, up to $20 million
  • Coverage for legal liability for death or bodily injury to any person arising from the use of your vehicle, up to $5 million
  • A replacement vehicle for a period of 14 days after you sell or dispose of your current vehicle
  • Choice of repairer
  • Reimbursement of all legal costs and expenses you incur in relation to an incident covered by the policy, with prior agreement
  • Lifetime repair guarantee
  • Cover for your legal liability for loss or damage to other people's property while driving an uninsured substitute vehicle, up to $20 million
  • Cover for damage to your vehicle caused by an uninsured driver/ vehicle, up to $3,000

Are there any optional extras available through RAA?

Yes – under RAA’s Comprehensive Car Insurance policy, the following optional cover is available:

  • Hire car:
    • Covers the costs of a loan car from the repairer, up to $30 per day for a maximum of 14 days or until the day after repairs are completed
    • After an incident, pays up to $65 per day for a maximum of 14 days or until the day after repairs are completed, or until 2 days after you receive advice that your claim has been settled

What are some of the pros and cons of buying car insurance through RAA?

  • Lifetime vehicle replacement: if your car is written off, RAA will replace your vehicle with a brand new one.
  • Unlimited windscreen repair and replacement: RAA will repair or replace unlimited windscreen, window or roof glass damage, with no excess for breakage claims.
  • Lifetime guarantee on repairs: guaranteed repairs as long as you own and continue to insure your vehicle with RAA.
  • Generous personal effects cover: you can get up to $1,000 to replace personal effects stolen from your vehicle or accidentally damaged in an incident.
  • Limited hire car provision: unless your car is stolen, car hire after an incident is only covered as an optional extra.
  • Limited optional extras: only one optional extra is available on comprehensive policies, relating to car hire.

Common questions about RAA car insurance

Can I get RAA car insurance if I live outside South Australia?

No – RAA is a South Australia-based organisation that only insures South Australia residents. However, if you live in South Australia and take out cover with RAA, you will be covered for interstate travel in Australia.

Does RAA offer CTP insurance?

No – RAA does not offer Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance. In South Australia, there are five providers of CTP insurance, which are approved by the government: AAMI, Allianz, NRMA, QBE and Youi.

Does RAA have any specialised car insurance options?

Yes – on top of its standard car insurance options, RAA also offers:

Yes – RAA’s Road Service can be purchased separately to its car insurance policies. It offers three levels of cover – Standard, Plus and Premium – depending on your requirements, and provides Australia-wide coverage.
