What car insurance policies are available through ahm?

ahm offers the following types of car insurance to Australian drivers:

Comprehensive Cover

Comprehensive car insurance has the most extensive list of inclusions of the different types of cover, covering accidental loss or damage to your own car as well as damage to other people’s property. ahm’s Comprehensive cover offers the following inclusions:

  • Coverage for loss or damage to your car caused by accidents, collision, theft or attempted theft, malicious damage, fire (including bushfire) or natural events
  • New-for-old car replacement if your car is less than 2 years old
  • Hire car after theft, up to $70 per day for up to 14 days
  • Up to $1,000 for accidental loss or damage to a trailer or caravan attached to your car
  • Up to $500 for essential temporary repairs to make your car roadworthy
  • Transit cover for loss or damage to your car during transportation between locations in Australia
  • Up to $500 for accidental loss, theft or damage to personal property kept inside your car
  • Up to $500 for replacement child safety seats, baby capsules and prams that were damaged or stolen while inside the car
  • Up to $500 for your accommodation and travel expenses if your car cannot be driven and you are more than 200km from home
  • Up to $1,000 to replace or recode keys and locks after theft
  • Reasonable towing costs for transporting your damaged car to the nearest safe location or approved repairer
  • Legal liability up to $20 million
  • Legal liability cover for accidents occurring while you are using an uninsured registered substitute car
Third Party Property Cover

ahm’s Third Party Property insurance offers a more basic level of protection, covering you for damage you cause to other people’s property but not your own vehicle. It includes:

  • Up to $20 million in legal liability cover
  • Up to $3,000 for vehicle damage if have an accident with an uninsured driver

You can choose to add optional Fire & Theft cover to your Third Party Property plan, which has the following additional inclusions:

  • Coverage for loss or damage to your car, up to a maximum of $10,000, in the event of theft, attempted theft or fire, including bushfire
  • Hire car after theft, up to $70 per day for up to 14 days
  • Up to $500 for essential temporary repairs to get your car back on the road
  • Up to $500 for theft or fire damage to personal property
  • Up to $500 for your accommodation and travel expenses if you are more than 200km from home and your car cannot be driven
  • Up to $1,000 to replace or recode your car's locks and keys after theft
  • Reasonable towing costs to transport your damaged car to a safe location or an approved repairer

Are there any optional extras available through ahm?

Yes – ahm’s Comprehensive cover offers the following optional extras:

  • Pay As You Drive cover: save money if you drive less than 15,000km a year
  • Hire car following theft or damage to your car
  • Excess-free windscreen cover: one front windscreen repair or replacement if it is accidentally damaged
  • Excess-free kangaroo damage cover: cover in case of accidental damage caused by a collision with a kangaroo or other animal
  • Sports gear cover: cover for your sports gear when it is in or securely attached to your car

What are some of the pros and cons of buying car insurance through ahm?

  • Pay As You Drive option: if you drive less frequently, you can reduce your premium with PAYD cover on Comprehensive plans.
  • Wide range of optional extras: ahm’s Comprehensive plan offers a choice of optional extras, including kangaroo damage cover.
  • Choice between agreed and market value: Comprehensive policy holders can choose whether to insure their car for its agreed or market value.
  • No choice of repairer: any repairs must be done by a repairer appointed or approved by ahm, with no option to choose your own.
  • Limited windscreen repair cover: available as an optional extra on Comprehensive plans, it only covers one repair or replacement of a front windscreen.

Common questions about ahm car insurance

What is ahm’s Pay As You Drive cover?

ahm’s PAYD cover gives you the same level of cover as its standard Comprehensive plan but calculates your car insurance premium based on how much you actually drive, which can help to lower costs if you drive less frequently. When choosing this option, you can select your estimated mileage, up to 15,000km a year, which is tracked using odometer readings.

Does ahm offer CTP insurance?

No – ahm doesn’t offer any Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance in any state or territory of Australia. Check your state or territory government’s website to find out what your CTP options are.

Does ahm offer roadside assistance?

Yes – ahm’s roadside assistance is a separate service provided by Allianz that you can subscribe to on top of your car insurance policy. This covers events such as:

  • Breakdown
  • Flat battery
  • Flat tyres
  • Lack of fuel
  • Key issues
  • Electric vehicle out of charge
