What car insurance policies are available through Australia Post?

Australia Post offers the following types of car insurance to Australian drivers:

Comprehensive Car Insurance

Comprehensive coverage offers the most extensive list of inclusions among the different types of cover – though it also tends to be the most expensive. Australia Post’s Comprehensive Car Insurance offers the following inclusions:

  • Coverage for accidental loss or damage to your car resulting from incidents including collisions, theft or attempted theft, fire or explosion, weather events like hail or flood, and malicious damage
  • Replacement baby capsules and child seats if damaged or stolen from your car
  • Up to $1,000 for damaged or stolen personal items inside your car
  • Up to $100 for travel costs if the incident occurs over 100km from home
  • Up to $1,000 emergency accommodation and transport costs if more than 100km from home
  • Towing to the nearest repairer or safe location and reasonable storage costs
  • Hire car after a not-at-fault accident until repairs are completed or your claim is settled
  • Hire car after theft or attempted theft for up to 14 days
  • Up to $500 for essential temporary repairs to get your car back on the road
  • Up to $1,000 for stolen or damaged trailers attached to your car
  • Replacement car keys after theft (excess payable)
  • Policy cover automatically transferred to a replacement car for up to 14 days
  • ‘No excess’ windscreen, sunroof or window glass repair (not replacement)
  • Legal liability up to $30 million
  • Car replacement after a write-off if less than 3 years old
Third Party Property Damage Car Insurance

Third-party car insurance offers a more basic level of cover than comprehensive plans. Australia Post’s Third Party Property Damage Car Insurance includes:

  • Coverage for damage caused to other people’s property, rather than to your own vehicle
  • Up to $30 million for legal liability that arises from damage to someone else’s property caused by the use of your car
  • Up to $5,000 for uninsured driver damage
  • Automatic transfer of cover after changing your car, up to 14 days

You can choose to add Fire and Theft cover to your policy, which has the following additional inclusions:

  • Coverage for loss of or damage to your car caused by fire, theft or attempted theft
  • Replacement baby capsules and child seats if stolen or damaged by fire
  • Reasonable cost of towing your car to the nearest repairer or safe location and reasonable storage costs
  • Hire car after theft or attempted theft for up to 14 days
NSW CTP Green Slip Insurance

Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance is a mandatory form of insurance required for all vehicles in Australia, covering you for third-party compensation claims if you cause injury or death with your vehicle. In New South Wales, this type of insurance is known as a Green Slip. If you are a NSW resident, you can purchase Green Slip insurance through Australia Post. It will cover costs such as:

  • Medical expenses
  • Income replacement
  • Rehabilitation
  • Ongoing care

Are there any optional extras available through Australia Post?

Yes – Australia Post offers several optional extras on its Comprehensive Car Insurance policy, though these are not available on its third-party plans:

  • Choice of car repairer
  • ‘No excess’ windscreen, sunroof or window glass replacement
  • Hire car after incidents other than theft or not-at-fault accidents, up to 14 days

What are some of the pros and cons of buying car insurance through Australia Post?

  • High legal liability cover: legal liability cover on all plans is $30 million, which is higher than many other insurers.
  • Generous new car replacement limit: Australia Post will replace new cars written off within 3 years, while other insurers limit this to 2 years.
  • Choice of repairer: drivers can choose their own repairer as an added extra on comprehensive plans.
  • No roadside assistance: Australia Post does not offer roadside assistance either as a part of its car insurance plans or as a standalone service.
  • No personal effects cover on TPFT plans: personal effects damaged or stolen from your car are not covered under Third Party Fire and Theft plans.
