Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Overview

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a delightful and charming breed made famous by its association with the late Queen Elizabeth II, who owned many of this breed in her lifetime. The word ‘corgi’ is Welsh for ‘dwarf dog,’ and this ancient breed originates from the Pembrokeshire area of Wales. These compact dogs are easily recognized by their short legs, long bodies, and upright ears. They are closely related to their near cousins, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. However, there are distinct differences between the two breeds. Cardigan Corgis have long bushy tails and larger, rounder ears, whereas Pembroke Corgis have shorter tails and smaller, pointed ears. Their shorter tails are thought to be a result of tail docking, which occurred regularly with this breed before this practice was made illegal.

Corgis were traditionally used as herding dogs, known for their agility and intelligence when rounding up sheep. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are characterised by their friendly and outgoing nature. They are highly social dogs that thrive in the company of other dogs and their human families. Despite their small stature, corgis are active and energetic dogs, requiring regular exercise and mental stimulation to avoid their tendency towards obesity.

Common diseases and conditions of Pembroke Welsh Corgis

  • Hip Dysplasia: This is a common orthopaedic condition affecting the joint's development. It can lead to discomfort and mobility issues.
  • Degenerative Myelopathy: This is a degenerative neurological condition that causes weakness and loss of nerve function in the hind legs.
  • Obesity: The corgi is known to suffer from obesity, which can make walking difficult with its short legs.
  • Intervertebral Disc Disease:This is a condition that occurs when the disc between the vertebras becomes damaged, causing swelling and leaking of fluid. Symptoms include limping and reduced movement.
  • Epilepsy: Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that can often affect Welsh Corgis. It may lead to seizures.
  • PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy): Progressive Retinal Atrophy is an inherited eye disorder causing gradual vision loss. Initial signs include night blindness, leading to reduced day vision.

Breed-specific issues:

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is well-known for its herding instincts, which may lead them to nip at ankles. Early training is important to prevent their nipping tendencies. They are also quite vocal dogs and can bark a lot if not given sufficient mental stimulation.

How much does pet insurance cost for a Pembroke Welsh Corgi?

Most Australians can expect to pay between $20 and $60 a month for pet insurance. There are many factors that can influence the cost of pet insurance for your corgi, including the following:

  • Age: The older your dog is, the more pet insurance is likely to cost. This is because senior dogs tend to have more physical health conditions and illnesses due to age, and so present a higher insurance risk.
  • Type of insurance you choose:  There are three basic types of pet insurance available in Australia; accident-only, accident and illness, and comprehensive insurance. An accident-only policy is the cheapest type of insurance available, with comprehensive coverage costing the most.
  • The policy annual limit: Each pet insurance policy has an annual limit, which is the maximum amount that will be paid out on the policy in one financial year. Annual limits range from around $10,000 up to $25,000 or more.
  • Sub-limits: In addition to an annual limit, there may also be sub-limits that apply to the policy, for example, a $300 sub limit for consultation fees, or a $5,000 limit for cruciate ligament conditions.
  • Benefit percentage: Pet insurance does not cover 100% of the cost of your vet bill. Instead, it may pay a percentage of the total bill. This can range from 50% for cheaper policies, up to 90% for the best policies available.
  • Excess amount: This is the amount you’ll need to pay out-of-pocket each time you make a claim on your policy. Some pet insurance policies do not come with an excess amount, whilst others do.
  • Any add-ons you choose: It’s possible to add on more cover options to a basic policy, such as emergency boarding fees, routine care and dental care. These add-ons extend the scope of your pet insurance, but do increase the overall cost of the policy.
  • Discounts: some insurers offer discounts of between 5% and 15% if you have multiple pets insured together, if you pay your premium annually, or if you bundle your pet insurance with other forms of insurance with the same company.

Common questions about Pembroke Welsh Corgis

Do Pembroke Welsh Corgis have more health issues than other dogs?

Yes, like many purebred dogs, Pembroke Welsh Corgis are susceptible to a few known health concerns. They have more genetic health issues than some other breeds due to their long spine and short legs, so it can cost more to insure a corgi than other breeds. Regular check-ups with a vet, a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight can help minimise these risks to ensure your corgi enjoys a happy, healthy life.

Are Pembroke Welsh Corgis easy to train?

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are generally intelligent and eager to please their owners, however they can sometimes display a stubborn streak. This characteristic makes them less responsive to training efforts than some other breeds. Starting training early and use positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise. Consistency and patience are the key to successfully training a corgi.

Do Pembroke Welsh Corgis shed a lot?

Yes, they do shed quite a bit, especially during seasonal changes. This breed has a double coat that requires regular grooming to manage shedding effectively. Brushing them a few times a week can help reduce the amount of loose hair around your home.

Do Pembroke Welsh Corgis make good family pets?

Yes, Pembroke Welsh Corgis are renowned for their excellent suitability as family pets. Their affectionate and friendly nature, combined with their manageable size, makes them a great choice for families with children. However, their herding instinct also means they have a tendency to nip at heels, so they should be supervised when near young children.
