Transfer limit
For security reasons, some IMT providers apply a transfer limit, so the amount you send overseas may be capped. Common limits range from $5,000 up to $20,000 but there are many providers with a $0 limit. This is something to keep in mind if you need to send large sums of money. The reverse is also true; some providers have a minimum amount that needs to be sent.
Transfer speed
If you need your money sent urgently, it’s a good idea to ask providers their transfer time. With the average time being 1-5 business days, it’s quite a broad timeframe in an urgent situation, so it pays to ask if same day transfers are available for the country you’re sending to.
Countries serviced
Not every provider will transfer funds to all countries. It goes without saying that you can rule out providers who don’t service the country you wish to send to.
Exchange rate
The exchange rate on offer will vary from the wholesale rate or mid-market rate by anywhere from 0.1%-10%. This means that the exchange rate you find on Google isn’t actually the rate that you’ll get on your transfer. When comparing providers, the one offering an exchange rate closest to the mid-market rate is the one providing the best value.
