What is a mobile and internet bundle?

A mobile and internet bundle is a package deal which, as the name suggests, combines an internet plan and a mobile phone plan with the same provider. These deals are often offered by telecommunications companies and are designed to offer convenience and cost savings to customers.

When it comes to mobile and internet bundles, there are three main types of deal you can choose from:

  • Home internet and mobile phone plan: you may be able to bundle your home or office’s internet connection with a mobile phone plan. Depending on your provider, this may be an NBN plan or another plan which also utilises mobile networks, such as 4G or 5G home wireless internet.
  • Mobile broadband and mobile phone plan: a less common option is a deal to include both a plan for your mobile and a mobile broadband connection. This means you could potentially gain access to regular mobile services and an internet connection through your tablet or laptop with a data-only SIM card.
  • Home internet and home phone line: although the old landline system is no longer compatible with the NBN, there are still options available if you want a home phone connection. In most cases, you’ll need to use a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) line if you want a home phone with your NBN or another unlimited internet connection.

What are the benefits of bundling my internet and mobile plans?

There are several benefits to consider when looking at bundling your mobile and internet plans, including:

  1. Cost savings: bundling your plans with a single provider can result in cost savings and a cheaper internet plan Some providers offer discounts, reduced rates or special promotions for customers who choose to bundle services. This can translate into lower monthly bills compared to having separate plans with different providers.
  2. Convenience: managing your telecommunications services becomes more convenient when bundled. You’ll deal with a single provider for customer support and technical assistance, simplifying the administrative aspects of your communication services.
  3. Streamlined billing: bundling your plans can also mean you receive a single, consolidated bill for both internet and mobile services. This eliminates the hassle of managing multiple bills from different providers on different pay cycles, making it easier to track your expenses and payments.

However, it’s worth noting that there may be some drawbacks to consider before selecting your deal. These include:

  1. Limited flexibility: bundled plans may come with less flexibility compared to separate plans. You might find it challenging to switch one of the services without affecting the other. For example, if you want to change your mobile plan but it's bundled with your internet service, you may need to adjust both plans, potentially leading to higher costs or unwanted changes.
  2. Overcommitment: bundled plans may force you into longer contract terms or choosing higher-tier plans for both services, even if you only need one of them at a particular level. This can result in unnecessary expenses and tie you to services you don't fully utilise.
  3. Limited provider choice: bundling restricts your choice of providers. If you prefer different providers for mobile and internet services based on factors like coverage, customer service or specific plan features, bundling might not align with your preferences.

Common questions about mobile and internet bundles

Can I share data between my mobile and internet plan?

There may be some bundles which may enable you to share data between your internet and mobile plans. However, this isn’t always the case, so it’s important to check with your provider to see whether this option is available if it’s something you’re keen to include in your package. This is more common among the best mobile broadband plans.

Are there any other plans I can bundle with my internet?

Yes – some providers may allow you to bundle your internet plan with a host of other services, most notably your energy plan. This may include electricity, gas or a combination of the two. There may also be options available for you to bundle internet with a set-top box or streaming subscription.

Are there additional features included in mobile and internet bundles?

Some providers may offer additional perks and features when you bundle services. These could include extra data, unlimited calls, overseas call coverage or access to exclusive content like streaming services or entertainment packages in some cases.
