What types of energy plans are available in Queensland?

There are various types of retail energy plans available to cater to the diverse needs of customers from Brisbane to Cairns, the Gold Coast to Townsville, and all of regional Queensland in between. These plans are offered by a wide variety of energy retailers operating in the state. These are the two most common types of energy plans you can consider: 

Market retail contract

These contracts, also known as market offers, are the normal energy plans you can compare here through Savvy. They often include competitive electricity and gas tariffs, plan discounts, renewable energy options and possibly other additional benefits such as rewards schemes to attract new customers.  

Standard retail contract  

Also referred to as a standing offer, this is the default plan offered by retailers. It provides a basic level of service and is regulated to ensure that customers have access to electricity and gas at a reasonable cost. The rates and terms of a standard offer must comply with the regulations set by the Australian Energy Regulator. 

For customers living outside of South East Queensland, Ergon Energy provides the standard offer, and prices are regulated by the Queensland Competition Authority. 

What factors should I consider when choosing a market energy plan in Queensland?

When selecting a market energy plan in Queensland, there are several important factors to consider: 

• Tariffs: understand the tariff structure of the energy plan, including the rates for peak, off-peak, and shoulder periods. Consider if the tariff structure aligns with your energy consumption habits, and if you can possibly take advantage of lower rates during off-peak times. 
• Pricing: compare the pricing of different market offers. Look for competitive rates that suit your budget and offer potential savings compared to standard offers. 
• Contract terms: review the contract terms, including the length of the agreement, any exit fees or penalties for early termination, and the flexibility to switch plans if needed. 
• Discounts and incentives: consider the availability of discounts, incentives, or bonus cash offers provided with the energy plan. These could include pay-on-time discounts, direct debit discounts, or rewards programs that can help reduce your overall energy costs. 
• Renewable energy options: if you are interested in supporting renewable energy sources, check if the energy plan offers green energy options. There are also carbon neutral energy plans available. Check if the retailer offers options to offset your carbon footprint if you're interested in supporting renewable energy. 
• Billing and payment options: check the available billing and payment methods, such as direct debit or online billing, to ensure they align with your preferences.

Who are the current energy distributors in Queensland?

Electricity 

There are 3 electricity distribution networks in Queensland.  

• Energex, covering South East Queensland including Brisbane, Ipswich, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. 
• Ergon Energy, covering rural and regional Queensland including the Torres Strait Islands. 
• Essential Energy, operating in parts of southern Queensland. 

Gas 

Gas distribution in Queensland is divided between these two distributors: 

• Allgas Energy: Brisbane region (south of the Brisbane River), the south coast including the Gold Coast (including parts of northern NSW), Toowoomba and Oakey. 
• Australian Gas Networks: Brisbane city region (Brisbane CBD, north of the Brisbane River and Ipswich) and the Northern region (Rockhampton and Gladstone). 

However, in Roma and Dalby, the local town councils operate their own gas distribution networks. 

Energy distributors are the companies in charge of delivering gas and electricity to our homes and businesses. They own and maintain the powerlines, poles, pipes, and meters that bring energy to our residences. 

On the other hand, energy retailers purchase power from generators and sell it to customers at a higher price. They pay the energy distributors for using their infrastructure. The cost of using powerlines and gas pipes is included in the retailer's bill, known as the ‘supply charge,' and the retailers, in turn, compensate the distributors for utilising their infrastructure. 

If you have a power supply issue, such as a power outage or a gas leak, you will need to contact your energy distributor rather than the retailer you obtain your energy from to fix the problem.

What help is available from the Queensland State Government with power bills?

The Queensland Government provides various forms of assistance to help residents with their power bills. These include: 

• $550 Cost of Living Rebate: a rebate available to all Queensland households on electricity bills, as announced in the 2023/4 Queensland Budget  
• Queensland Electricity Rebate Scheme: vulnerable households can receive up to a $1,072 rebate on their electricity bills to help offset the cost of electricity consumption. 
• Energy Savers Program: this program offers financial support and advice to eligible low-income households to improve energy efficiency, reduce energy usage, and lower energy bills. 
• Financial Hardship Programs: the government works with energy retailers to provide flexible payment options and assistance programs for customers experiencing financial hardship. 
• Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession Scheme: this scheme provides concessions to eligible customers who have a medical condition that requires the use of cooling or heating equipment. 
• Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme: this scheme offers emergency financial assistance to eligible customers facing a short-term financial crisis that affects their ability to pay their power bills. 

These programs and initiatives aim to support Queensland residents in managing their energy costs and ensuring continued access to essential energy services for those suffering financial hardship.
