How do I compare car insurance in QLD?

Before you jump in and buy your car insurance policy in Queensland, there are a few important things to think about. These include:

  • How much your policy costs: make sure the policy you choose is affordable for you and presents good value for money.
  • What your policy covers: of course, you’ll need to look at the events that are and aren’t covered before you buy it. Have some ideas about what you want coverage for when you’re comparing offers.
  • The size of your excess: how much are you willing to pay when you have to make a claim? Look for insurers that offer policies with excess options that suit your budget.
  • Signup incentives: can you get a discount for buying online or bundling your home and contents insurance as well? These could be valuable, but make sure the policy is still worth it beyond the discount.
  • Whether you need optional extras: what extras are available through your insurer? Think about things like personal effects cover and choice of repairer, whether you need them and whether they’re worth the cost.
  • Choice of agreed or market value cover: will you get to choose between market value or an agreed sum if your car is written off?

Frequently asked QLD car insurance questions

If you live in a flood-prone area, can you still get your car insured in QLD?

Yes, it’s still possible to get car insurance in flood-prone parts of Queensland. It’s worth noting that you may have fewer options to choose from and premiums can be higher in parts that are at greater risk. Only comprehensive car insurance is likely to cover flood damage itself, which may also come as an optional extra with some insurers.

How can I make a claim against someone else’s car insurance in QLD?

Your insurer will handle claims made against another driver if you’re involved in an accident that you aren’t at fault for. Once you provide all the information to your insurer, they can speak with the other party’s insurer to work out who is responsible for what.

Is hail damage included if you live in QLD?

Yes, most comprehensive car insurance policies will offer protection for hail damage to your vehicle. This won’t extend to hail damage that occurred before you were covered by the policy, though. So, if you’re expecting to cop a big QLD storm, be sure to have timestamped photos of the damage to your vehicle, which will help with processing your insurance claim.

If my vehicle is usually garaged, but damaged while parked at a shopping centre, am I covered?

You can be covered for damage to your vehicle if it’s parked in a public place away from your garage. Provided it qualifies as a covered event, you can have your claim paid out.
