How do I compare car insurance in Darwin and the NT?

There’s plenty to keep in mind when comparing car insurance offers online. Here are some of the things to look out for while you’re scrolling through quotes from insurers:

  • Premium cost: of course, how much you’re paying for your policy is one of the key points to consider before you buy it. You don’t want to be overpaying for coverage.
  • Inclusions and exclusions: you’ll want to buy a policy that includes cover for the key areas you need. In equal measure, though, look for notable exclusions so you can be aware of what isn’t covered.
  • Optional extras: these can be added to your policy for an additional fee, like windscreen repair and choice of repairer. Before you buy them, though, make sure they’re worth the extra outlay.
  • Discounts: plenty of insurers offer discounts for first-time customers buying online or those who buy multiple policies with them. Make sure the policy is worth it beyond the discount, though.
  • Excess: look at how much (or how little) your insurer allows you to choose for your excess. The higher your excess, the cheaper your premium will be.
  • How you’re using the car: consider how you’re using your vehicle when deciding on your policy. This is especially the case if you’re using your car for business purposes, which will impact your premium.

Frequently asked NT car insurance questions

Is there specific car insurance to cover you for damage from wildlife?

No, there isn’t a specific car insurance policy designed to cover you if your car is damaged by wildlife, but comprehensive cover does usually offer protection here (classed as an unexpected event). This means you can be covered if you hit a kangaroo and your car is written off.

Are you covered if you drive off-road and in remote areas in the NT?

Yes, you can be covered for off-road driving by a comprehensive car insurance policy. However, if you break the law at any point and your car is damaged in the process, your policy won’t cover you.

Is cyclone cover included in Darwin car insurance policies?

You can be covered for damage to your car by a cyclone and other extreme weather events, but not all insurers offer the same protection. Be sure to read the PDS before you buy your policy to find out whether cyclone damage is included in its coverage.

If I have modifications to my ute or 4WD, can it be insured?

Whether your ute or 4WD can be covered with modifications depends on the nature of the mods. Illegal 4WD modifications like exceeding the allowable height limit won’t be covered, but certain aftermarket accessories like bull bars and legal suspension lifts can be covered.

Coverage varies depending on the insurer, so check with them if you’re unsure before you buy. It’s worth noting that undisclosed modifications or accessories won’t be covered.

Are there any restrictions on the age of the driver for car insurance in the Northern Territory?

Yes – drivers must be of legal driving age and hold a valid licence to be covered by a car insurance policy. This can extend to young drivers on their L-plates or P-plates, but it’s important to check with your insurer if they have any specific requirements when it comes to young drivers who aren’t on their full licence.
